Celebrate Brooklyn!
Celebrate Brooklyn is one of the city’s longest running free concert series that brings together the arts of music, film, dance, and theater centered around iconic Prospect Park from late June to August. Guests are welcome to bring chairs, blankets, and food to enjoy a warm night under the stars. A recent free performance at the park featured the legendary Chaka Khan! Be on the lookout for this summer’s amazing lineup of other free concerts in the park.
Lincoln Center Festival
The Lincoln Center Festival will run from July 6 – August 2 and highlights artists from around the world. The festival will feature perfected Shakespeare plays, different works of the renowned National Ballet of China, and interesting acts such as the divine puppetry of “Ramona” featuring two trains in love. These events will be sure to enthrall those who enjoy modern arts and the talent only Lincoln Center can bring.
Lincoln “Out of Doors” also runs July 22-August 9. Free outdoor music, dance, and spoken word events, as well as art showcases and family shows will be performed at select locations around the city.
Metropolitan Museum of Art
This year, Anna Wintour hosted her oriental-themed annual Met Gala in ode to the museum’s Asian art centennial celebration. The Met ends its Asian exhibition with “China: Through the Looking Glass, 100 Western Garments influences by Chinese culture.” The fashion and cultural display will be accompanied by Chinese paintings and pieces that have helped to shape our modern culture.
This summer you can also enjoy the Met Rooftop Garden and Martini Bar with great views of Central Park while indulging in appetizers and cocktails uptown.
SummerStage
SummerStage hosts amazing free concerts in all five boroughs and has variety for everyone to attend: benefit concerts, international acts, and kid and family events. The concerts are hosted by the CityParks Foundation. You can even become a member and skip the lines. Most of the concerts are absolutely free. Check the schedule to see which ones interest you!
Recent Openings to Explore
The Whitney Museum of American Art finally opened its new location in the Meatpacking District this spring. The modern space has eight floors of contemporary American art in an ideal, easy-to-reach location.
The High Line has been open to the public since 2011, but as of late last year, the third and more northernmost section now expands the park from Gansevoort Street all the way to West 34th Street.
The Ellis Island Museum of Immigration opens its Peopling of America galleries which covers Manhattan’s importance as a major immigration station.
