We all know that living space comes at a premium in New York City.

And, unfortunately, we can’t be like Alice and take a pill that makes us small. So at some point, anyone who lives in NYC has to decide – how much space is enough? How many square feet can you sacrifice and still feel comfortable? While that number is different for everybody, here’s what you need to consider to determine that number for yourself.

How much time do you spend at home?

One of the first things to take into consideration is how much time you spend at home. Does your job take you away for a week or two every month? Do you like to spend most nights out with friends? If you aren’t a homebody and don’t anticipate doing much more than sleeping at your apartment, then you can certainly get by with less space. Conversely, if your idea of a perfect Friday night is curled up on the couch with a good book or making a three-course meal from scratch with your bae, then you’re going need a place that has a bit more elbow room.

Where do you want to spend your money?

Housing costs account for the biggest chunk of your monthly expenses when you live in New York. A bigger space will not only sell or rent for a higher price, you’ll also pay more for utilities. Ask yourself – are you content with shelling out more each month to have the extra square footage? Or would you rather use that money to try new restaurants or score tickets to a music festival? Your spending habits can help you decide whether or not you really need that extra space.

Are you creative?

Living in a small space requires a certain level of creativity. Every object should have more than one purpose, and making the most of the layout is key. Are you good at envisioning how you could make the small space work with a little inspiration? Or does thinking about things like Murphy beds or how to turn a closet into an office space give you anxiety? If you like the challenge of making a small space work for you, then go for it. If not, then spring for the extra space.

Is location important?

At some point in your apartment search, you’ll have to decide if location or space is more important to you. Do you love the idea of being in the middle of it all in Manhattan, where world-class museums and trendy bars are right outside your front door? Or are you more into the idea of having a sanctuary, a place where you can escape from the city for a few hours each day? Location lovers will need to learn to live with less space, while those seeking some peace and quiet can afford a larger place in one of the NYC boroughs.
