Moving into your new place in New York is exciting, scary, confusing, and exhilarating all at the same time. There’s almost nothing better than carving out your own personal corner in a place like NYC.

But those first few days of being surrounded by unpacked boxes can be unsettling. Mornings are hard enough already, but when you can’t find your coffee maker, your toothbrush is MIA and you haven’t seen your phone charger in two days, it’s enough to send even the most Zen person over the edge.

We totally get it, which is why we’ve devised this list of the easiest and best ideas to get your new place feeling like home as soon as possible.

Get Internet service

How did we live in a world without Internet? Try not to find out if you can. If possible, arrange to have your Internet service set up before you get there or upon arrival. Being able to stay connected without interruption will be a huge relief when making a big move. You can keep up with emails and texts, stream music and unplug with a Netflix show as needed. You can also easily find out the best place to order pizza delivery on that first day, and where the nearest liquor store is to score a celebratory bottle of Prosecco.

Make a comfortable place to sleep

Moving is exhausting. The best thing you can do for yourself is set up your bed as soon as the last box comes in the door. The next few days will be a marathon, and you need a place to get a good night’s sleep and recharge. While you’re at it, set up a little table next to the bed with a reading lamp. Overhead lighting can be so harsh, so having some soft mood lighting at night will make it easier to relax and will create a cozy atmosphere, even amongst the chaos.

Get the bathroom set up

Honestly, a new place doesn’t feel like home until you feel comfortable in the bathroom. Put a new shower curtain up ASAP. Give it a good clean, even if it was cleaned before you moved in. Get your toiletries out and ready to use. Treat yourself to a couple of new, fluffy towels. Bust out a scented candle or two and create a space that feels more like a spa, and less like the bathroom at the Starbucks down the street.

Fire up your favorite playlist

You know how music can change the energy in the room. Create a playlist or two for those first few days that’ll set the tone you want to have in your new place. Play it while you’re unpacking. It’ll make everything more fun and less stressful.

Stock up on essentials

Find the nearest bodega or market, and stock up on a few essentials. Although it’s easy to grab a coffee just about anywhere, it sure is nice to sip a cup at home in your pajamas. Get some snacks for the fridge and any cleaning supplies you may be missing.

Share a couple pics

While you may not think your new place is Instagram-worthy just yet, you should still share a pic or two. By photographing your new place, it’ll give you a chance to find some of the things that make it special – like the light that comes in through the windows in the afternoon or the cool vintage tile in the kitchen.

Plan a party

Do not wait until your new place is perfect to invite a few friends over. The best way to make a place feel like home is to fill it with the people you love the most. Your friends and family will be forgiving of your unfinished place and excited about the new chapter you’re starting in your life. It’s time to celebrate!
