Woohoo! Summer is here, and there’s no better time to take advantage of everything that New York City has to offer. From music festivals to parties to parades, June is the perfect month to head out into the city and get a taste of what makes it so special. Here’s a look at some of our favorite events coming up this month.

SummerStage

(Throughout June) Do you like outdoor concerts performed by your favorite artists? How about if they’re free? SummerStage happens all over the five boroughs all summer long and offers more than 100 music and dance performances, most of which are free. Check the website for the full line-up, which includes The Metropolitan Opera Summer Recital Series and the Big Daddy Kane 30th anniversary show.

World Science Festival

(May 29-June 3) The 11th annual World Science Festival is a week-long event that features discussions, performances, films and more all centered on the world of science. Learn from the world’s leading scientists and celebrities passionate about science including Alan Alda and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Shakespeare in the Park – Othello

(May 29 – June 24) If you haven’t experienced the magic of Shakespeare in the Park, this is the year you must do it. Up first is a production of Othello starring Tony winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson. Free tickets are available for every performance and can be obtained at the theater on the day of the show, an in-person lottery at The Public Theater, via mobile lottery, and at partner organizations in all five boroughs.

Governors Ball

(June 1-3) One of the most highly anticipated concert events of the summer is the Governors Ball Music Festival. Happening on Randall’s Island Park, the line-up this year includes Jack White, Travis Scott, and Eminem.

Tour the Battery

(June 7,14,21,28) A fun way to get to know Battery Park is by taking a tour. Every Thursday at 1:00pm you can learn about the history of the park, visit its landmarks and monuments, take a spin on the Seaglass Carousel, and wander around the perennial gardens. Best of all, it’s free!

Coney Island Mermaid Parade

(June 16) Another can’t miss event is the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Touted as the World’s Largest Art Parade, this fun annual event attracts more than half a million people. This year, the Queen Mermaid and King Neptune are counter-culture artists and heroes Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman.

Jazz Age Lawn Party

(June 16-17) For a trip back in time, head to the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island. Now in its 13th year, it’s known as the world’s largest prohibition-era-inspired party. The New York Times calls this family-friendly event one of the year’s best.

Father’s Day Sail in NYC

(June 17) If your dad is the sea-faring type, give him a Father’s Day he won’t forget by taking him for a sea voyage. Manhattan by Sail offers a fun sailing getaway that includes amazing views of the Statue of Liberty and a taste of a traditional sailboat. They set sail from Lower Manhattan and offer a truly authentic and unique experience.

Egg Rolls, Egg Creams, and Empanadas Festival

(June 17) For dads that enjoy multicultural experiences that include food and performances, take him to the Egg Rolls, Egg Creams, and Empanadas Festival in Chinatown. This festival offers a mash-up of Puerto Rican, Chinese and Jewish foods, music and demonstrations, and of course all the egg rolls, egg creams, and empanadas you can eat!

NYC Pride March

(June 24) Finally, to cap off the month, be sure to take in the NYC Pride March, part of NYC Pride Week. Known as the biggest Pride celebration in the world, the march includes more than 450 marching contingents and over 100 floats. This year’s Grand Marshals include Billie Jean King, Lambda Legal, Tyler Ford, and Kenita Placide.
