The lazy days of summer are behind us and autumn will soon be in full swing. Thank goodness, because there is so much to see and do in New York City during the month of October! From architecture festivals and food events to haunted houses and Halloween parades, the city has something fun for everyone this fall.

Archtober

(Oct 1 – 31) – October is the month for Archtober, NYC’s month-long festival of all things related to architecture and design. More than 60 partners participate, with daily events that include building tours, lectures, competitions, and parties. The festival guide is available beginning in September at the Center for Architecture and various locations around town.

Taste of the Village

(Oct 4) Enjoy food and drink from more than 30 vendors and support the Washington Park Conservancy at the same time. Taste of the Village happens under the famous historic Arch and promises to be a tasty evening. Early bird tickets start at $65; event runs from 6 – 9pm.

New York Comic Con

(Oct 4 – 7) Who needs to fly to San Diego when you can experience the same fun and action right here in NYC? New York Comic Con is four days of panels, events, special guests and more happening at the Jacob Javits Center. If you love comic books, cosplay, superhero movies, or pop culture, then this is the event for you.

The New Yorker Festival

(Oct 5 – 7) Do you want to hobnob with New York’s intellectual bigwigs? Then get yourself tickets to The New Yorker Festival. Sponsored by the eponymous magazine, this annual event is a celebration of ideas and creativity featuring artists, writers, editors and other guests. Enjoy a weekend full of interviews, screenings, panels, performances, and much more.

Taste of the East Village

(Oct 6) After sampling the fare at Taste of the Village, you need to balance it out with Taste of the East Village. This annual fundraiser features food and drinks from more than a dozen local vendors including Insomnia Cookies and Brick Lane Curry House. Tickets are $25 online or $30 on the day of the event.

Art in Odd Places

(Oct 11 – 14) Art is great and all, but it’s even better when it’s sandwiched into unusual spaces. That’s the idea behind Art in Odd Places, an annual festival that runs from Avenue C to the Hudson River along 14th Street. Be prepared to confront artists from all disciplines and challenge your idea of how public spaces can be used.

New York Coffee Festival

(Oct 12 – 14) You’ve packed so much into the month, but it’s only half over! You need to caffeinate to see the rest of October through. Lucky for you, the New York Coffee Festival is here is to help. Taste your way through New York’s coffee scene, attend educational workshops, and meet some of today’s hottest baristas.

Marco Polo Festival

(Oct 13) Celebrate not one, but two cultural histories at the Marco Polo Festival. This annual event showcases the rich heritage of both the Asian and Italian immigrant communities in New York City and their joint historic district in Lower Manhattan. Visitors will enjoy a parade, performances, good food, and more.

Gravesend Inn

(Oct 19 – 31) You can’t fully experience October in NYC unless you attend a haunted house or two. The Gravesend Inn is an annual scare-fest hosted by the New York City College of Technology. A new room is opening this year in the Haunted Hotel, so they’ll be something new to scare you! Tickets are only $10 general admission and $5 for students.

Village Halloween Parade

(Oct 31) Finally, round out the month’s activities with a night at the Village Halloween Parade. 2018 marks the 45th anniversary of this popular event. Be sure to wear a costume and enjoy hundreds of puppets, dozens of bands, dancers, artists, and more. This is one parade you don’t want to miss!
