It’s that time of year when we’re all busy making resolutions for the New Year. Although many of us concentrate on making changes to our personal habits, why not consider making some changes around your NYC apartment? Where you live has a big impact on your overall happiness and well-being. Here are the ten things for your home that we think will take your year to the next level.

Safe cleaning products

It seems like everybody makes a resolution to get their apartments clean in January. If you’ve been relying on products that contain harsh chemicals, now is the time to switch to something non-toxic. There are plenty of organic cleaners out there that will get the job done. You can even save yourself some cash and make your own with white vinegar and baking soda.

Good bed sheets

You spend about one-third of your life in bed. Why would you skimp on second-rate bed sheets? Improve the quality of your sleep with bed sheets that feel great against your skin and hold up over many years.

Super-soft sofa blanket

While you’re at it, get yourself one of those super-soft sofa blankets to curl up in while you’re binge-watching your favorite show on Netflix. You’ll be so comfortable you may never want to leave your apartment again.

LED bulbs

Do you want to save money and help the environment? Then it’s finally time to switch out all your incandescent and CFL bulbs for LED bulbs. LEDs are super efficient and use up to 90 percent less energy than other bulbs. They also have a much longer lifespan so you’ll be buying and replacing bulbs less often.

Renters insurance

If you don’t already have renters insurance, then this is the first item you should get for your apartment this year. Renters insurance will cover your belongings in case of fire, theft, water damage and more. You’ll also be covered in case someone is injured in your place. This is a must-have for anyone renting in NYC.

Color

Does your apartment feel uninspiring? Does it give you a case of the blahs? Then maybe it’s time to add a little color. Although neutrals can be very relaxing, there’s no harm in adding a pop of color here and there. You can add color even if your landlord or building manager won’t allow you to paint.

Donation box

Start the New Year off right by eliminating some of the clutter that’s been accumulating in your apartment. Choose a small box and keep it in your closet. As you find things you no longer use or need, drop it in the box. Once it’s full, donate those items to charity.

Plants

Breathe a little life into your home in 2019 with a live plant or two. Plants can help clean the air of toxins and contribute to your sense of well-being. Don’t worry if you don’t have a ton of space or even much natural light – there are still many options available.

Essential oil diffuser

Ditch the scented candles in 2019. They’ve been shown to emit hazardous chemicals and of course, they increase the risk of starting a fire. Instead, get yourself an essential oil diffuser. This is a safe and effective way to infuse your apartment with pleasing smells and even add a little humidity during those dry winter days.

Extra set of keys

Finally, resolve to get a spare set of keys for your apartment if possible. It’s always nice to have a spare set on hand when you have out-of-town guests or if you’ve somehow misplaced yours (it happens to the best of us).
