One of the best ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day is to treat your special someone to a wonderful meal. But how do you choose which restaurant to go to? According to the NYC Department of Health, there are more than 26,000 restaurants in the city! That’s a lot to choose from. So we’ve devised a list of some of the best places to take your date depending on your style. Be sure to make reservations early, as Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year for NYC restaurants.

Romantic

If you imagine sharing a quiet, candlelit meal in a cozy restaurant, then you have your pick of places. One if by Land, Two if by Sea is often touted as the most romantic restaurant in the city. The place is dripping with charm and flowers and delivers the “wow” factor you may be looking for. To really impress your date, take them to the Rainbow Room, the 1934 lounge on top of 30 Rock. It’s elegant, sophisticated, and boasts jaw-dropping skyline views. Be aware that jackets are required.

Trendy

Are you the kind of person who likes to try the city’s hottest new restaurants? Then check out Leonti on the Upper West Side. This Italian eatery features dishes such as Cinnamon Scented Fettuccine with Wild Boar Ragu and Stuffed Rabbit. For an opulent night out, try Gupshup in Gramercy. Indian chef Gurpeet Singh helms the restaurant that features fusion dishes such as Wild Himalayan Morels and Grilled Lobster Tail in a Moilee Sauce.

Themed

Does your date enjoy cosplay and/or haunted houses? Then one of the city’s many themed restaurants may fit the bill. Try Beetle House NYC in the East Village. It caters to those who love “all things dark and lovely” and features dishes such as Cheshire Mac & Cheese and Sweeney Beef. Reservations are required for dinner. For cat lovers, try Koneko, a cat café on the Lower East Side. It’s America’s first Japanese-style cat café where you can mingle with cats up for adoption while you nosh on light bites and coffee.

Exotic

If you’re the adventurous type, then there are plenty of food experiences to try in NYC. Burke & Wills on 79th between Amsterdam and Broadway is an Aussie-inspired restaurant where you can dine on Bone Marrow and Kangaroo Burgers. For an even more squirm-worthy dining experience, check out Takashi in the West Village. Here you’ll find menu items like Nama-Senmai (third stomach with spicy miso sauce), Testicargot (cow balls escargot style with garlic shiso butter), and grilled Premium Super Thick Tongue. Yum?

Take-Out/Delivery

Do you just want to phone it in this Valentine’s Day? There are plenty of great take-out and delivery places that can help you create a memorable meal at home. Heat things up with some Fai Dang or Tom Yum Plaa from Uncle Boon’s Sister in NoLita. Or create an Italian feast for your date with classics from Pepe Rosso To Go in SoHo.
