Not gonna lie – sometimes the city can get so hot in the summer it feels like the sidewalks (or your brain) are melting. If your apartment’s A/C isn’t up to the task or you’re getting cabin fever, there are plenty of places in the city to cool off. Sure you could just head to the bar or get a Tasti D Lite, but why not try something a little different? Here are five awesome ways you can beat the heat in NYC this summer.

Learn to sail

Nothing cools you off like an ocean (or river or harbor) breeze. And there’s no better way to experience that than from a sailboat. If you’ve ever dreamed of learning how to sail, you can finally make it a reality at Manhattan Sailing School. Sign up for their Basic Sailing classes and learn everything from the lingo and rigging to what to do if you have a man overboard (talk about beating the heat). They sail out of Battery Park City and Jersey City, and you can even earn your American Sailing Association certification.

Take a dip

You don’t have to live in a doorman building with a pool to take a dip this summer. There are plenty of hotel and rooftop pools scattered throughout the city to satisfy that urge. Best of all, you don’t even have to book an overnight stay, as many offer day passes. Check out The Beach at Dream Downtown in Chelsea, Profundo Day Club in Long Island City, or Parker New York in Midtown.

Catch a flick

When you just can’t take the sun anymore, retreat to the dark and cool confines of a movie theater. Sure, you can go to any old corner cinema. But why not make something special of it by checking out one of the city’s high-end theaters? The iPic Theater at Fulton Market offers luxury reclining seats with blankets and pillows (in case it’s too cold) as well as table service during the movie. If you’re into foreign or art films, then head to The Paris Theater to experience Manhattan’s last surviving single-screen cinema. To impress a date, check out Metrograph on the Lower East Side, which shows archive quality 35mm films and state of the art digital video.

Create your own breeze

If you’d like some thrills with your cool breezes, then get yourself to Governors Island. Their Flywire Zip Line lets two people race down a 300 feet long cable, hitting up to 21 mph. That should cool you off. It’s great for both seasoned thrill seekers and newbies alike and offers great views of downtown and the Statue of Liberty.

Get sprayed

Finally, if you have kids, then you must take them to Water Lab at Pier 6. Located in Brooklyn Bridge Park, this children’s playground features an awesome water jet field that’ll keep the little ones entertained for hours. If you’re lucky, you may catch some spray yourself.
