Your mom is special, and she deserves a Mother’s Day that is a cut above the rest. Though you could easily go the flowers-and-brunch route, why not treat her to something a little more out of the ordinary? As you can expect, NYC delivers when it comes to unique events to celebrate your mom. Here are some of our favorites.

Take your mom for high tea

If your mom is a Downton Abbey fan – or she just likes feeling fancy – take her for high tea. Lady Mendl’s Tea Salon in Gramercy is a chic salon located in a Georgian brownstone in a historically fancy section of town. The five-course tea includes all the traditional favorites, including scones with clotted cream and bottomless pots of tea. For an iconic NYC experience, treat your mom to tea at the Russian Tea Room in Midtown East.

Plan a fun afternoon at Governor’s Island

Is your mom the adventurous type? Then plan an afternoon of fun activities at Governors Island. Start with a free, one-hour walking tour to learn about the island’s transformation. Then rent bikes or a surrey and enjoy seven miles of car-free trails, or learn to kayak for free at Pier 101. Reserve a grill and treat your mom to a homemade barbecue. At the end of the day, relax on one of the island’s 50 red hammocks in Hammock Grove.

Commune with butterflies

If your mom loves whimsy, then head to the Butterfly Conservatory at the American Museum of Natural History. Mix and mingle with more than 500 gorgeous butterflies amidst the tropical foliage. The butterflies come from all over the world and live in a habitat that closely mimics their natural environments.

Indulge in cheese and wine

Does your mom like to rosé the day away? Then score some tickets to Cheese and Rosé for Mother’s Day at Murray’s Cheese Shop in Greenwich Village. Mom can enjoy six glasses of rosé paired with six seasonal cheeses. The event happens on Sunday, May 12, at 2:30 pm. General admission tickets are $90.

Share some laughs at a comedy show

Maybe your mom needs a good laugh. Who doesn’t, right? Then head to Caroline’s on Broadway on Sunday, May 12, at 4 pm for Funny Women of a Certain Age: Mother’s Day Edition. The show is hosted by Carole Montgomery and features Ritu Chandra, Sherry Davey, and Rhonda Hansome. Tickets start at $27.25.

Party the night away

Finally, if your mom loves an exotic night out, then head to Arabesque in Midtown for Mother’s Day Moroccan Night! Starting at 7 pm, your mom will enjoy a three-course meal plus champagne while a DJ and a belly dancer entertain her. Tickets are $120. Maybe that’s a little pricey, but your mom is worth it.
