Make sure to be cautious when you think you’ve found love at first sight with your dream apartment.

It’s okay to be picky! You have to know what you’re in for before you sign the legal documents.

Luxury real estate brokerage Platinum Properties is here to point out some small, but incredibly important things to look for when searching for a new home.

1. Cellphone Reception

  • Check your phone signal in every area of the unit
  • You won’t be happy having to go into the bathroom for every text you have to send
  • Don’t forget to check the common areas and hallways

2. Water Pressure

  • Don’t be afraid to run the faucets, turn on the shower, and flush the toilets
  • Wait to see how long it takes for the water to warm up
  • You’ll soon find out what needs repairs and whether or not you’ll need to purchase a new showerhead

3. Noise

  • Let the room go silent so you can see how the noise is outside
  • Think about how difficult it might be to sleep at night
  • Wait to see if the walls between units are too thin

4. Power outlets

  • Take note of the locations of power outlets
  • Will it be hard to arrange furniture to keep the outlets exposed?
  • Are there not enough outlets in each room?

5. Damage and Pests

  • You don’t want to move into a place only to have to deal with inspections later
  • Check for any signs of mold, leaks, or stains
  • Ask the landlord if there is any record of infestation in the building or unit

6. Safety

  • Look around for an emergency exit that is close enough to you
  • Make sure that there are enough smoke detectors throughout the unit
  • Go into the common areas, laundry room, and parking garage – would you feel safe in these spots late at night?

7. Appliances

  • You want to confirm that all the appliances are working and don’t need any fixing
  • Do you prefer a gas or electric stovetop? Stainless steel or black? Is your budget large enough to replace these appliances?
  • Figure out if the refrigerator is included or if you need to explore other options

8. Windows and Doors

  • Do the doors close and lock securely or can a draft easily crack it open?
  • How easy is it to open the windows? How well do the windows lock?
  • There should be a deadbolt on the door of the main entry
