Although spring cleaning may not be that exciting, it is necessary. As much as we don’t like to spring clean, there’s nothing better than the fresh feel of an apartment when its done.

The key to cleaning according to Sonya Weisshappel, President of Seriatim is “Self-awareness. You have to know enough about who you are to be clear about what works for you in your space.”

Spring equals lightness and space, so the first place you should do to begin is declutter and create light in your apartment. Here are four easy tips to tackle your spring cleaning:

Room to Room

Even if your apartment isn’t that big, cleaning can be overwhelming because we tend to try and tackle all the space at once. However, the easiest and most effective thing to do is clean one room at a time.

Get rid of the clutter

Knowing what you have can make things a lot easier. If you haven’t used it in the last year, chances are it can be donated, recycled or thrown out. When going through your items place them in piles until everything has been put into its place.

Store your warm clothes/Rearrange your closet

If you no longer need your chunky knit sweaters or heavier coats, store them or rearrange your closet so that the warmer clothes are in the back and your spring clothes are more readily available. This will help you stay organized and save you time when you need to find the right clothes for the weather.

Change winter bedding to spring

The same rules apply to winter bedding, change your bedding from winter to spring, even if its just storing wool blankets and heavy curtains/drapes.

During your spring cleaning, don’t forget to replace the batteries in smoke detectors and carbon-monoxide detectors.
